Bart Van Cauwenberghe

Bart Van Cauwenberghe (b. 1969, Belgium) is an abstract artist from the Flemish Ardennes, where he lives and works in Maarkedal (Etikhove).

His practice is situated at the intersection of painting and material exploration.

After a break, he resumed his artistic practice two years ago with a pronounced focus on material.

His work does not start from the image, but from the skin of the painting: layers, structures, and interventions form the basis of his

visual language.

His works—both on canvas and MDF—are constructed using acrylic, texture paste, and organic material.

The color palette is deliberately reduced and earthy, allowing nuance and texture to take center stage.

Characteristic of his work is the tension created through targeted, minimal interventions in the material. Layers are built up, interrupted, and rearranged, creating a layered skin in which traces of the creative process remain visible and actively play a part in the composition.

His compositions seek a balance between stillness and tension. Subtle shifts, transitions, and interventions determine the rhythm of the image and guide the gaze without being intrusive.

He views painting as a process of reduction and precision, in which not addition but omission is the determining factor.

Today, he is working on a cohesive oeuvre in which texture, disruption, and stillness take center stage.
